James B. Dolan

Jim Dolan is a Boston lawyer with more than 30 years of trial and appellate experience. He has been active in most types of civil litigation, primarily as defense counsel.

Jim grew up in the Boston area where he attended the Boston Public Schools. He is a graduate of Boston Latin School, the oldest public high school in the United States. He has degrees from Boston College (A.B., English, 1966) and Cornell Law School (J.D. 1969).

In 1990, Jim was one of the founding partners of Badger, Dolan, Parker & Cohen. He has tried many serious cases and obtained favorable verdicts for his clients. Over time he has been involved in almost all areas of defense work except for medical malpractice. He began with the insurance defense practice which he still continues.

During his early years as a lawyer, he tried numerous automobile and premises liability jury and jury waive cases. He also represented insurers in disputes about liability coverage, as well as in life, health, and disability insurance claims. In the late 70's he became active in defense of products liability cases, at first for insurers and then for self-insured manufacturers. In more recent years he has devoted a substantial amount of time to commercial and construction litigation, as well as to the defense of employment discrimination and legal malpractice claims. Jim is also an experienced appellate practitioner with numerous reported decisions.

Since the early 90's, Jim has been active in defense bar associations such as the Massachusetts Defense Attorney's Association and The Defense Research Institute. In 1994 he was elected to membership in The International Association of Defense Counsel. He has lectured and written for DRI and IADC. His articles "Federal Reservations: Their Significance for Products Attorneys" and "An Introduction to Employment Practices Liability Insurance" appeared in the October 1996 and December 1997 issues of DRI's Magazine For the Defense. He is a member of the Board of Editors of the Defense Counsel Journal. His contributions to that publication include "Crediting Payments of Concurring Tortfeasors: The Decline and Fall of the Jury Rule?" (July 1998) and "Workplace Violence: The Universe of Legal Issues" (July 2000). He has also written an article entitled "Awards of Litigation Interest by Massachusetts Courts" which appeared in 35 Suffolk University Law Review 453(2001).

Commissioned in the quartermaster Corps through Boston College R.O.T.C., Jim pursued a 28 year career in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve. He served on active duty at Fort Lee, Virginia and in the Republic of Korea, where he was the Shipping Officer at Camp Carroll Depot. He left active duty in 1972 as a Captain and finally retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994. He is a graduate of the Army War College, former holder of a Top Secret security clearance and has served as an action officer with the Army Staff at the Pentagon. He belongs to many military organizations such as the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C. and the Reserve Officers Association.

An avid reader, Jim has never owned a television set. He is a proprietor of the Boston Athenaeum, a membership Library with a collection of 600,000 books. Lately, he's been spending a lot of time with various translations of the Iliad, especially Alexander Pope's. He's also been reading Sir Walter Scott's Waverly and some miscellaneous fiction by Robert Louis Stevenson. Jim's other major recreational interest has been travel. He's visited most European countries and has been to London more than ten times. This Fall went on another trip to London and also spent a few days in Edinburgh.

Jim has volunteered his time for a wide variety of pro bono activities, especially in the area of professional responsibility. He served as a member of the Ethics Committee of the Massachusetts Bar Association for five years. He was chairman of a Hearing Committee of the Board of Bar Overseers of the Supreme Judicial Court. This committee was responsible for recommendations concerning the discipline of attorneys. He has represented respondents at the Board of Bar Overseers on a pro bono basis. On May 14, 2003 Jim was elected to membership in the American Law Institute. For other biographical details see the listings in "Who's Who in America" and the "Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory".
